The 2012 Water Polo Inter-Varsities took place in Galway last weekend, 27th and 28th of January, in what proved to be one of the most competitive in many years. With 7 Men’s teams and 6 Women’s teams the majority of the colleges were represented over the two day event.

Friday kicked off with the group matches, for both the Men and Women, and concluded on Saturday morning. This gave a Women’s Semi-Final line up of DIT v UL and UCD v Queens. After two very tight games the Women’s Final line up would be DIT v UCD. This proved to be an incredible match that was full of drama and excitement. Missed penalties, sin bins, and even last minute goals were all part of the spectacle that even required extra time in order for us to crown a Women’s Champion. In the end DIT managed to sneak over the line and claim the title of Women’s Inter-varsity Champions 2012.

DIT Ladies Team - Waterpolo IV Champions 2012

Adam Caulfield (IUSWA) presents Helen Broderick (DIT) with the ladies trophy
On the Men’s side, after a very entertaining set of group matches, that even had a winning goal on the buzzer, the Semi-Final line up would be NUIG v UCD and Trinity v NUIM. However it was the teams that topped their respective groups earlier in the day that would reach the Final, NUIG v Trinity. The Final proved to be a tough and very physical encounter, as both teams gave it there all to be crowned Champions. It was the home side though that had that little bit extra about them to continue their winning form and clinch the title on a Score line of 10 – 8.

NUIG IUSWA Champions 2011
Congratulations must be extended to both NUIG and DIT on their success, while a special word of thanks must also be extended to NUI Galway for hosting what was a very exciting, competitive and entertaining weekend.

The Winners; DIT Women and NUIG Men
Published November 21, 2011 12:25

UCD Men and Women went home with smiles on their faces from the Novice Water Polo Inter-Varsities after both teams were victorious.
The competition opened with a very tight encounter between the men's teams of UCD and NUIM in which the match ended all square.
Next up was UCD against DIT, this proved a convincing win for UCD winning out by 7 goals.
Then it was the turn of the Women, UCD v Trinity. The great sporting rivalry that exists between the two colleges continued, however UCD ended up winning out in the end.
With the Women's title wrapped up there was only one match left to decide the Men's Champions, NUIM v DIT, with NUIM having to win by more than 7 goals to take the title. In what was a very exciting finish to the tournament, NUIM were denied the title thanks to a late effort by DIT, which left NUIM winning the match by 6 goals instead of the required 7.
We also had two MVP awards to be given to the best performing Male and Female. The men's winner was NUIM's Marcus while the Female winner was UCD's Orla.
IUSWA would like to congratulate the Winners. We would also like to thank the colleges that fielded teams in what was a very successful tournament.

The IUSWA AGM will be held in the Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast at 12pm.
All positions are open to election and there will also be a vote on the new Constitution - click here to view. If anyone has any feedback or comments on this please email info@iuswa.ie. Please submit nominations to this same address. Nominations will be open until the election begins at the meeting.
The Agenda is as follows:- Chairperson's address
- Financial Report
- Addresses from Swim Ireland, the IWPA and CUSAI
- Discussion and vote on the new Constitution/constitutional amendments
- Election of officers
- Any other business
You can click here
for a copy of the current Constitution under which this AGM will be run. Voting at all stages is restricted to two votes per affiliated institution.
The main change to the new Constitution is the introduction of standing committees for swimming, waterpolo and lifesaving. This will lessen the reliance, but not eliminate involvement, on the particular college committees of any given year. This will centralise the running of competitions under the IUSWA bringing about consistency in the standard of competition as well. It will also see non-students with experience being brought in at standing committee level.

Well folks as most of you may have heard, the waterpolo IV's for 2011 that were to be held this weekend were postponed due to a fault with the pool we were to be using.
We are hoping to be able to reschedule the event for sometime in March, so keep checking the site and the Facebook for any updates.

Polo Varsities have to be postponed due to IWPA fixtures for this weekend. Some colleges have released players to their clubs and so won't be able to field a team.
The plan is to hold trials, possibly the week after swimming varsities to select the Celtic Nations team.
I'm still awaiting clearance from the IWPA as to the possibility of holding varsities on the last weekend in March when the Junior Cups will be on. This is the weekend before Celtic Nations.
Sorry for the confusion! After the Trinity pool broke down it's been a nightmare trying to find a replacement.
Regards,
Jeff
